Zung Self-Rating Depression Scale

Zung self-rating depression scale was developed by Dr. William W.K Zung to evaluate the severity of depression in patients who have been diagnosed with depressive disorder. This self administered depression test can be easily taken in 5 to 10 minutes to check the intensity of your symptoms.

The scale consists of 20 questions that represent the most common symptoms of depression. The scale can be further divided in to 10 positively phrased and 10 negatively phrased questions.

You will have 4 different options to chose from against every question of the scale. The available options along with their scoring are as follows:

  • A little of the time = 1
  • Some of the time = 2
  • Good part of the time = 3
  • Most of the time = 4

Scores Interpretation

The scale has a maximum score of 80. The final scores of this scale can be interpreted as follows:

  • 25-49 Normal Range
  • 50-59 Mildly Depressed
  • 60-69 Moderately Depressed
  • 70 and above Severely Depressed
