Suicide rate is on the rise in US and all over the world. According to latest statistics, almost 13 people in every 100,000 commit suicide in United States every year. That is twice as many dying from suicide than from card accidents.

These 10 warning signs of suicide are explained below:

1. Ideation

A person looking to commit suicide will start talking about death and self harm. He / she will start talking about different ways through which one can take own life. This is one of the most obvious signs of someone who is suicidal.

2. Substance Abuse

A suicidal person acts impulsively and indulges in substance abuse.

Alcohol and drug abuse especially by those people who normally don’t engage is such activities might be a sign that they don’t care about the society norms and their lives anymore.

3. Purposelessness

Such people believe as if their life has no purpose or meaning. These feelings may be triggered by certain events in life such as loss of a loved one or not being able to achieve their life’s goals.

4. Anxiety

Anxiety alone may not be considered a clear sign of someone who is suicidal. However, anxiety coupled with any of the other signs mentioned in this article can be indicative of suicidal behavior. Such people start getting anxious about things that don’t really matter in a normal person’s life.

5. Trapped

Feeling of being trapped in your own body or in the environment is another major sign of suicidal behavior. Such people start believing that their personal freedom is jeopardized and this life is merely a prison for them and the best best way to get freedom is to end this life.

6. Hopelessness

A suicidal person truly believes that this life is not worth living and that they have nothing to look forward to. These feelings can also be the result of life events which at times make you believe that there is no light at the end of this tunnel we call life.

7. Withdrawal

Social withdrawal is another symptom of people who have suicidal tendencies. Such people prefer to be left alone and the activities which were once enjoyable for them all of a sudden feel worthless to them.

8. Anger

People who are suicidal easily get angry and irritated. They start acting out and getting in to unnecessary fights because they don’t feel that their life has any value. However, some people are aggressive by nature but if a person who is normally laid back starts acting out this way, then it is a clear indication of suicidal tendency.

9. Restlessness

Suddenly becoming restless and acting as if there is an important task which needs to be completed is also a symptom associated with suicidal behavior. Unfortunately, that important task in the mind of a suicidal person is taking his / her own life.

10. Mood Changes

A suicidal person also exhibits sudden changes in mood. Such people either become happy and satisfied because they think that their misery will end soon or they become extremely sad and worried because they don’t see any hope in this life.
